Is Breast Augmentation Right For You?
Breast augmentation has provided many women with increased self-confidence, better figure proportion, and improved body image. Women report that clothes fit better, and they no longer feel self-conscious about their breast size and shape.
Breast augmentation enhances the breasts by inserting implants under, or over the pectoral muscles.
Breast augmentation can achieve several goals which include enlarging small breasts, breast symmetry, correct misshapen breasts, or reshaping and enlarging of breasts that have lost their shape or fullness due to pregnancy or the aging process.
It can truly be life changing; a breast augmentation can restore a youthful appearance, correct physical abnormalities, or just increase the breast size to help women feel better about themselves. Professional and personal relationships will experience huge benefits thanks to you new-found confidence.

Types of Breast Augmentation Procedures
Silicone Implants
Breast augmentation with silicone implants is one of the most popular procedures Dr. Tatarian perform at Kendall Plastic Surgery Center. Silicone implants come in various shapes and sizes and consist of silicone gel and silicone case.
Silicone is a synthetic material that feels similar to human fat, that’s why silicone implants feel so soft and natural when used for breast augmentation. Famous “gummy bear implants” are highly cohesive silicone gel implants.
They are known to retain their shape better than other implants.
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA) is the breast augmentation technique when breast implants are placed through an incision in the belly button leaving no visible scars on the body. This method of breast augmentation is associated with minimal pain and a faster recovery.
Anatomical Implants
Anatomical implants are contoured rather than round, fuller on the bottom/base and less full on the top like the anatomical shape of the natural breast.
This is sometimes called “teardrop shape.” Originally, these implants were used for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, but it became obvious that many women would prefer them for cosmetic breast augmentation as well.
Shaped Implants
Shaped silicone breast implants are also known as “Teardrop” implants. Unlike smooth round implants, these implants are shaped like a teardrop (thinner at the top than the bottom) and are designed to provide a better projection to the breasts.
Exercise After Breast Augmentation Surgery
You need to be patient about returning to exercise after your breast augmentation. Your body will let you know more than anyone else when to get back and when to hold back.
It is important that you don’t start back too early, because the consequences could be serious. Your healing muscles could tear, causing internal bleeding, hematoma, or capsular contracture. When in doubt, error on the side of waiting during your breast augmentation recovery.
The rule of thumb is to wait at least 6 weeks before returning to light workouts, (i.e. slow-paced walks or stationary cycling). Dr. Tatarian can advise you during your follow up visits as well.
Massaging Breasts After Surgery
It is recommended your breast be massaged for 1-3 months after surgery. These implant displacement massages will keep the soft tissue around the breast implant open.
Massaging should prevent the soft tissue capsule from shrinking and pressing the breast implant out of shape. This is known as capsular contraction.
Potential Breast Augmentation Surgery Complications
Before you decide on breast augmentation, you must calculate the results and risks associated with it. Dr. Tatarian will advise and inform as to any risks associated with your specific procedure.
Possible breast augmentation surgery risks include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Bleeding/Hematoma
- Infection
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation
- Poor scarring
- Faulty position of the implant
- Leakage or rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Fluid acclamation
- Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
- Persistent pain
- Possibility of revision surgery
What Type of Bra to Wear After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Right after surgery you will be provided with a post-operative garment for support and healing. You will wear that for about a week.
After, a soft, comfortable bra, without under wires is desirable. Soft support will allow your implants to drop. After your implants settle, any bra you wish will suffice. In some cases, however, when the implants are positioned early on, a supportive bra will be recommended to hold the implants in place. This is common in reconstruction cases.
